My Review of Primal Pit Paste's Zinc Based Wild Woods Aluminum Free Natural Deodorant Stick!
Updated: Sep 9, 2019
TL;DR: Primal Pit Paste... Acquire it!
Hi, millennial here! 👋🏼 I was an 80s baby, and questions like 'is my deodorant is toxic?' 'how much aluminum in deodorant is bad for you?' 'is my deodorant safe?' 'is it normal for my deodorant to cause sore armpits?' were not being asked like they are today. 🤷🏻♀️ Since I started wearing deodorant in middle school, I've used one kind: Ban Roll-On Antiperspirant Deodorant. 😵 Knowing what I know now, I will never buy or use it again. It is 18% Aluminium chlorohydrate (Aluminum salts - main purpose antiperspirant), and it also contains PPG-11 stearyl ether (11 units of propylene glycol aka "non-toxic" anti-freeze). 😒
A little over a year ago (when I was still faithfully using Ban Roll-On) I noticed an increasing soreness in my armpits. 'Is it normal for my deodorant to cause sore armpits?' was the google search that sent me down the rabbit hole. If you're new to researching deodorants, there are a lot of studies, articles, etc. on the absorption of Aluminum thru your skin from your deodorant and its ability to mutate cells. You can start your research here. 'Aluminum is used as an anti-caking agent in food,' 'PPG is a common food additive,' 'Aluminum chlorohydrate and PPG are FDA approved,' etc. etc. Listen, you can do what you want with your body, but I am not a big advocate of regularly ingesting or topically using toxic chemicals. While 'small amounts may not harm you,' Aluminum does go right to your brain and it along with other chemicals, can sit in your body for decades. If you're using these toxins every day for years and/or decades, their levels are ever-increasing, and at some point, they will manifest in your body. They might show up as brain fog, gut issues like constipation, low energy levels, inflammation and joint pain, skin sensitivity like itching and rashes, chronic migraines, and abnormal smelling body odor, etc. I'd rather avoid them as much as possible altogether.
Ok, now on to the star of the show: Primal Pit Paste Zinc Wild Woods Natural Deodorant Stick:
This deodorant is formulated with Zinc, which is an excellent alternative to both Baking Soda formulations and Aluminum-based formulations. Now, Zinc can also be an irritant to some people. My husband is one of those people. When we were first switching to natural-based deodorant, he tried a couple Zinc based formulations and only one of the three didn't irritate him - it just had a lesser % Zinc than the others. Primal Pit Paste didn't irritate him! I don't know Primal Pit Paste's Zinc % levels in their sticks but it wasn't enough to case a red, itchy rash on him like some others did. If Zinc based deodorants have caused a rash under your armpits, this specific one may not. You can read the ingredients here:
Now, when I switched to natural deodorant, I did NOT know about the 'detox stages.' The stages usually last about four weeks. The first stage you will likely be both extra sweaty and smelly. If you use an antiperspirant (like I did), your pores are SUPER clogged. One of the main ingredients in antiperspirants is the Aluminum I mentioned before. It works as an antiperspirant because it shrinks the pores and sweat glands in your armpits, which regulates the sweat and odor. So, now the first week is about your pores beginning to detox all the buildup and bacteria and become unclogged. You may not smell or feel gross during the first week. Just wait. Fun fact, the yellow stains some people get on their clothes is not from sweat. It's from the Aluminum in the deodorant reacting to the proteins in your sweat. The chemical reaction is what produces those gross armpit stains on your clothes. Ew.
The second stage is the worst. Your pores are fully unclogging, and you stink. 😫 This stage is also where people quit the natural deodorant route because they don't know about the detox stages. I was one of those quitters. 🙋🏻♀️ Then I learned about the detox stages. I had to start all over again since when I quit, I started back up using Ban Roll-On. Don't quit. Just keep your deodorant with you and maybe some Body Spray. You may shower more than once a day some days; it just is what it is. Get a loofah (I love the hand gloves) and some natural anti-bacterial soap (listen don't knock it because it's HIGH quality and 100% amazing - trust but verify 😏) to shower with to help speed up the detox of your pores. You can also shave (forget that pink tax with this razor) your armpits every day or other day to stop the hair from trapping the bacteria while you detox.
The third stage is the beginning of your downhill descent to normalcy!🥳 Your armpits are still detoxing, but the funk should be tamer. You may sweat more this week than you did the previous week, but you will start noticing the smell gets better and better. Sweat is pore waste, so if you're still stinky and sweaty, try eating more whole foods over processed foods. Sweat is supposed to be naturally odorless. Unicorns are walking among us, like my dad, who has never worn deodorant in their life, and they have no odor no matter how much they sweat. Good for them (or even you). 😒 I'm not one of them. 🙄
The final stage should be you smelling clean and being less sweaty! 🤩 I felt my 'detox stage' took longer than four weeks. I felt like my second funk stage lasted a little over two weeks, ick! 😭 But, after the end of my detox, I was SO surprised! 😎 There have been a couple of times where I haven't put on deodorant for a couple of days, and there has been no issue. I felt weird, like 'what if someone smells something I can't' but no issue. Honestly, I could not have done that before my detox.

I received this deodorant for free in exchange for my honest opinion. My honest opinion is that I like it, it is a natural deodorant worth trying, and I'd recommend it to people. My #1 recommendation is Young Living's Mountain Mint Deodorant. That is me personally, I've also tried a LOT of natural deodorants and settled on one brand. I am really interested in buying Primal Pit Paste's deodorant paste and their charcoal unscented deodorant stick to try as well! I'm currently alternating days between Primal Pit Paste and Young Living.
